Kisutu - Yellow
Product Description
The Kisutu kanga is one of the most enduring designs from the East African coast, originating in 19th-century Zanzibar. Over time, it spread across the region, becoming a timeless emblem of Swahili culture.
This yellow Kisutu, sourced from Kenya, features the classic central motif of “crosses and tangerines,” framed by mirrored panels of patterns — the hallmark of Kisutu design. Unlike most kangas, it carries no written inscription; its meaning is expressed through form alone.
While the red Kisutu from Tanzania is most often worn at weddings for its deep layers of symbolism, Kisutus in other colours, like this radiant yellow, are embraced in daily life across the Swahili coast. Cherished for their beauty and versatility, they are worn, gifted, and displayed as part of a living tradition that continues to adapt and inspire.
