Kisutu - Red
Product Description
The Kisutu kanga is one of the most enduring designs from the East African coast, originating in 19th-century Zanzibar. Inspired by imported textiles yet transformed into a distinctly Swahili form, it remains a lasting emblem of beauty, continuity, and celebration.
This red Kisutu, sourced from Tanzania, features the classic motif of “crosses and tangerines,” framed by mirrored panels. Unlike most kangas, it carries no inscription; its meaning is expressed through pattern and colour alone.
While Kisutus are now produced in a range of colours, it is the red Kisutu that is traditionally worn at weddings, carrying layers of symbolism: red for purity and love, black for the passage into union, and white for fertility and new life. Beyond weddings, the Kisutu is cherished in daily life, gifting, and home display — a living tradition that continues to adapt and inspire.
